Tour of Republic Services

Feb. 20, 2020 – A group of neighbors were hosted by Oyaima Camman-Calvo CLV Community Services. The purpose was to receive a tour of Republic’s Recycling Center. We were met at Republic Services by their resident Education Outreach Expert, Jeremy. The center we toured, we right away learned, is for sorting and not for the final destination of all of our recyclables. They sort here what IS and ISN’T recyclable. The sophistication of the equipment used during the various sorting cycles and the volume they process per sec. is humbling to observe.

One simple factoid to memorize is that Republic will sort and send on for recycling, items that are marked as # 1, #2 or #5. We were surprised that items marked #6 and #7 are actually supposed to be tossed in our black top trash bin.

There were a staggering number of factoids that we learned from our host, Jeremy at Republic. We all came away with an action item to vow to do even better at “Refuse what you do not need, Reduce what you do need, Reuse what you consume, Recycle what you cannot RefuseReduce or Reuse, and Rot (Compost) the rest.
